Million dollar child support case ends in arrest

As we made note of last week, child support payments aren't intended to be the harsh financial punishment they are too often perceived as being. Intended to replace the presence and support of a parent, payments and wage garnishments are sometimes, in the wake of a separation or legal divorce, a necessary means of securing what matters most-the and secure and stable environment for children to grow up in.

In light of this, the reluctance or outright refusal of many to fulfill their financial responsibilities can lead to serious legal repercussions. This week federal authorities and the U.S. Attorney's office have reported that the nation's "most wanted deadbeat parent" has been arrested and taken into custody. All told, the 50-year-old man owes more than $1 million in back child support, a total that tops all local figures both in San Antonio and throughout Texas.

The New York man was apprehended in Los Angeles Tuesday immediately upon landing on a deportation flight from the Philippines, where he had been held in custody last month. It is suspected that the man had been living in Thailand while avoiding child support payments.

Identified as America's most flagrant child support shirker, the 50-year-old had reportedly owed the $1 million in a decade's worth of back payments to three children born in two different marriages. An arraignment in court is expected for January 16.

Although the man's case is surely an exception to most child support cases, his million dollar support payment debt is an example of how serious a payment problem can become. In order to keep non-custodial parents committed and compliant with support payments, both during or after a separation process, a family law attorney should be quickly contacted and utilized.
