NASA star finishes third divorce

As Americans continue to live longer and longer, many re-evaluate their commitments and responsibilities as they enter life's later years. For some, separating from a spouse, even after decades of marriage, may eventually become necessary for a freer, happier 50s, 60s 70s, and even 80s. Separation amongst older Americans, a trend dubbed "gray divorce," has been steadily on the rise in recent years.

One 82-year-old celebrity, well-known for his contributions to the 20th Century's "space race," secured his own gray divorce late last month. Buzz Aldrin, who with Neil Armstrong inspired millions across both Texas and the world over for the 1969 Apollo 11 mission that marked the first human steps on the moon, finalized a divorce from his third wife on December 28, according to reports.

The divorce was apparently instigated by Aldrin, who in June 2011 filed for separation from his wife, Lois Driggs Cannon, citing irreconcilable differences. The settlement may prove costly for the former spaceman-half of a bank account valued at $475,000 will allegedly be awarded to his now ex-wife. Additional spousal support payments totaling $9,500 per month will be paid by Aldrin to Driggs Cannon.

Aldrin is one of many aging celebrities to recently file for divorce. Danny DeVity and Rhea Perlman, Al and Tipper Gore, Mel Gibson, Robin Williams, and Morgan Freeman have all recently either begun or secured a divorce, in many cases after multiple decades of marriage.

While a divorce can be temporarily stressful and even expensive for a couple, it is a small price to pay for a future life that is happier and more liberated once a failed marriage is left behind. Working with a family lawyer through mediation, negotiation, or courtroom litigation, those seeking a divorce at any stage in life can look forward to a favorable settlement and happier days ahead.
