Marino has unknown child but not unpaid child support

Even the most diehard Texas sports fans know the name of former NFL star Dan Marino. Since he retired from playing more than a decade ago, the former Dolphins quarterback has managed to stay out of the media limelight -- that is until this week.

Marino is a Hall of Fame player, a sometimes actor and spokesperson, a sports broadcaster, a husband and father to what the public once believed was six children. In a surprise report earlier this week, the public learned of a seventh child, only that child isn't his wife's.

The New York Post reports that Marino had an affair with a woman in 2004. As a result of that relationship, he has a daughter who has been kept secret from the public. But was she kept secret from Marino's wife and family? Neither sources nor Marino have disclosed that detail.

This secret about the otherwise very public figure isn't news to Marino. He says, "I take full responsibility both personally and financially for my actions now as I did then. We mutually agreed to keep our arrangement private to protect all parties involved." He claims that he has paid child support for the child all of these years, while the Post claims that Marino paid the mother "millions" to keep the paternity truth secret.

With the Super Bowl just around the corner and Marino scheduled to work on the broadcast, the game might temporarily serve as a distraction from this family matter. As the public has seen in similar situations like this in the past, such as with Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver, when secrets like this are news to the wife, the revelation can often lead to the dissolution of marriage and a very public split.
