Helping your kids stay in contact with a parent overseas

Deployment can be a very difficult thing for servicemen and women and their families. Even if you are no longer married to your former military spouse, yet you have children with him or her, that difficulty may continue to be something that you are forced to endure. While you may not feel a pressing need to stay in touch with an ex-spouse who is deployed, it is important that your children do so in order for them to stay in close contact with him or her.

According to the site Do Something.com, 2 million children have had to deal with the deployment of their parents since 2001. However, with just a little bit of extra planning and preparation, you can easily ensure that your kids maintain a healthy relationship with their deployed mother or father.

Start by developing a firm communication plan before your ex ever leaves. Decide upon which social media platform will be the one that is used primarily for personal communications. This will help keep your family’s private information segregated, and will make tracking personal conversations much easier.

Once you know the manner in which you’ll communicate, select a time at which your kids will carry that out each day. This helps to introduce some structure into the communication process while also giving both them and your deployed-spouse something to look forward to each day.

Finally, be encouraging of their communication efforts. Let them know that while you may not need to talk to your ex each day, it is important that continue to do so in order to stay well—connected with both of their parents.

While these tips should not be viewed as actual legal advice, they could make getting through a non-custodial parents’ deployment much easier.
