Easing into your reintegration after a deployment

If you are like most military members in San Antonio who are also divorced parents, the prospect of deployment can be a significant source of stress. Compared to those concerns, the thought of coming home will likely solicit feelings of joy. Yet we here at The Law Office of Roland R. Esparza, P.C. can attest to the fact that reintegration following a deployment can also be a stressful process.

During the 12-18 months that you were away, your ex-spouse and your children likely have established a routine that your return, while welcome, will significantly disrupt. There are, however, certain steps that you can take to help assist in getting all of your lives back to normal. These include:

  • Being empathetic towards your ex-spouse: Understand that it was likely difficult to relinquish the added custodial time he or she may have enjoyed while you were away. You can help ease this transition by initially deferring to him or her in parenting decisions as you all get reacclimated.

  • Not taking any initial awkwardness personally: Your children may have become accustomed to you being gone, so having you back may take some getting used to. Do not mistake this to mean that they are not glad you are home.

  • Talking to your kids about what happened while you were away: Information shared by DoSomething.org shows that 37 percent of children who experience deployment worry significantly about their deployed parents. Once you are home, that stress may continue as they think about what you might have done while you were away. Help them by explaining what your daily routine was like during your assignment (to whatever extent you can).
