Man claims ignition interlock caused Arlington crash

Distracted driving has become a huge problem both in San Antonio and throughout the rest of the U.S. in recent years. There is literally no shortage of activities and elements that can pull one's attention away from the road. A distracted driver can often be just as dangerous as a drunk driver. Certain technologies have been introduced into vehicles to help protect people from drunk drivers. Proponents of these likely never anticipated that their use could lead to further dangerous driving by introducing distractions.

That is, however, exactly the claim that a man is making after being involved in a fatal crash in Arlington. His truck struck a teen's vehicle as she was backing out of her driveway. The girl sustained serious injuries in the accident that later claimed her life (any injuries that the man sustained in the crash were unreported). Evidence at the scene suggests that the man made no attempt to slow his vehicle or avoid striking the girl's car. He claims that is because moments before the collision, he took his attention off the road to breathe into an ignition interlock device that was installed in his vehicle.

Ignition interlock devices are meant to keep people from driving drunk by not allowing their vehicles to start if alcohol is measured on a driver's breath. Investigators are looking into whether such devices are meant to be used when a vehicle is moving. They reported that the man was not drunk at the time of the accident.

The families and friends of people killed by either drunk or distracted drivers may be easily overwhelmed in their grief. Part of dealing with such grief may be seeking compensation from those responsible for their losses. Those wishing to do so may be wise to seek the services of an attorney.
