3 ways to combat stress during divorce

Because stress affects each person differently, the feelings felt during a divorce can become incredibly complex. Not only does stress overshadow daily aspects of life that have suddenly changed; it can also become prominent during divorce procedures themselves. Matters can become especially difficult when children are involved. Regardless of the individual situation, the following three steps can help newly divorced Texans get back on track.

1. Address Emotions

Putting feelings to the back-burner may seem a quick fix to a situation, but these solutions may often only be temporary. Money Crashers acknowledges the trying times of any separation, stating in an article on coping with divorce that some experts claim there are five stages of grief that individuals can experience post-divorce: denial, anger, bargaining (or attempts to fix the problem), depression and acceptance. Whatever the stage, it is important to handle fresh emotions with caution.

2. Plan Wisely

Money Crashers also identifies financial problems -- another common concern during marital separation -- referring to one study that shows that decreased levels of income post-divorce can reduce one's standard of living up to 40 percent. If children are in the picture, family planning can take careful time and consideration. Either way, the article recognizes the stress that can come with arranging child custody, and urges readers to communicate with ex-spouses to determine the best possible financial plan.

3. Take Time for Self-Care

Even when a divorcing couple does not have children, going through a divorce can have lasting effects on an individual. Mental Health America advises readers to take breaks during and after divorce procedures; doing so can allow proper time to heal. Simple tasks can also seem mountainous during such an upsetting time, and MHA also notes the importance of getting exercise, as well as plenty of balanced meals and rest. Starting a new life chapter after divorce may take a significant amount of time and effort, but there are ways to make the process more manageable.
