Car collisions and avoidance systems: An idea whose time has come

At the Law Office of Roland R. Esparza, PC, in Texas, we know what grievous injuries you and your passengers can suffer in a car crash, particularly one involving a head-on collision with another vehicle. What if you could reduce your risk of not only head-ons but also single-vehicle and sideswipe accidents by 11 percent? Would you do it?

As reported by CNBC, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety recently released the results of its new study finding that collision avoidance systems do exactly that. Furthermore, these technologies, including blind spot and lane departure warning systems, reduce your risk of injuries in a crash by 21 percent because they give you the time you need to avoid an impending crash.

Installation and usage

Unfortunately, you may find it difficult to purchase a new vehicle that includes one of these technologies as standard equipment. Only 6 percent of new 2017 vehicles include a lane departure warning system, and only 9 percent include a blind spot alert system. Another 57 percent of new vehicles offer them as part of a safety package or high-trim package, both of which usually add several thousand dollars to the vehicle’s cost.

The IIHS also discovered that a number of drivers whose vehicles have these technologies actually disable them. Why? Because although some systems vibrate the driver’s seat when the car begins drifting into another lane or when another vehicle is in the driver’s blind spot, others beep instead, and drivers find these beeps annoying.

Given that collision avoidance systems can save your life, a little annoyance seems a small price to pay for protecting yourself and your passengers. As with all aspects of safe and defensive driving, your own good sense should prevail. Should you have collision avoidance technologies in your vehicle, use them. Both you and your passengers will be glad you did.
