Family law issues are taken very seriously in Texas and most other states around the country. And in cases where kids are involved, the best interest of the children takes precedence in most legal proceedings. That is why requirements like child support payments are so vigorously enforced through legislation and the court system to help ensure children are taken care of and obligations are fulfilled. Every now and then, news breaks of someone being tried in court over an especially high back-child-support bill, and often times that person may be less than excited to pay up. Though, one recent case stands as an encouraging reminder that sometimes people just need the opportunity to do right by their family and the law.
In many states, debts like liens, owed child support and overdue taxes are automatically withdrawn from large gambling and lottery winnings. One man who learned this owed more than $29,000 in delinquent payments for three of his five children. The situation was so bad that he had faced the risk of being arrested for his failure to pay since 2009.
Fortunately for the man and his kids, he experienced the type of good luck most can only dream of and was able to pay off his entire child support debt. The father of five won the lottery. Because his lottery winnings covered what he owed, the man wants to begin taking care of his family again. His record is cleared and he still has roughly $150 million to spend as he pleases. That is a happy ending, indeed!
