Former NBA player sentenced to jail for unpaid child support

It is not uncommon to hear of divorced mothers in San Antonio who have custody of their children to end up on welfare for a time. Divorce can be tough financially, especially when spouses refuse to pay the required child support amount. It is hard to understand how a father could not feel responsible for his children, especially one who makes plenty of money.

This is the case for a former NBA player who owes hundreds of thousands of dollars in back child support for his three children who are now ages 20, 21 and 23. The man was reportedly earning $750,000 a year while he was playing in the NBA, but was still not making his child support payments.

He eventually left the NBA to play overseas where he was earning between $90,000 and $180,000 a year. His 21-year-old son said that he hadn’t seen his father since he was in the third grade. During the time his father was playing abroad, the family was forced to go on welfare to make ends meet.

The man recently appeared in federal court for sentencing as a result of his failure to pay over $660,000 in child support. He was ordered to serve nine months behind bars and pay restitution of $661, 277.

This is a case of a father being extremely negligent and irresponsible toward his children. If you are in a similar situation with your spouse, no matter what the amount of child support is owed, you would be well advised to speak with an attorney about what you can do to ensure that you receive the amount to which you are entitled.
