Preparing your kids for a pending deployment

For those San Antonio military couples that we here at the Law Office of Roland R. Esparza, P.C. work with, even more difficult than going through divorce proceedings is preparing their children for a pending deployment. If you have kids and are preparing to be deployed or have an ex-spouse who is, then it may be imperative for the two of you to work together to prepare the children properly. Taking the right steps before you or your ex leave can help your kids to better cope during this potentially troubling time.

As you prepare for a pending deployment, there are a few steps you can take to help calm your children’s concerns about what’s coming. These include:

  •          Having a frank, honest discussion: Oftentimes, children will assume the worst when it comes to any military service. Explaining exactly what it is that you or ex-spouse will be doing while away may help to assuage their fears.
  •          Assuring them that they will be taken care of: Let them know that they will still have one parent here to provide for them. At the same time, make sure that every element of their care is addressed should something happen to you or your ex while away.
  •          Take some stuff off of their plates: The website reports that 37 percent of children with a caregiver deployed worry significantly about his or her safety. Try and eliminate some of the other activities in their lives that only serve to add more stress.
  •          Spend extra time together: Make the most of the moments you have before the upcoming separation.

You can find more information on dealing with family issues during deployment here on our site.
