The damaging costs of spinal cord injury

When Texan residents get into a serious car crash, they could end up facing damage to the spinal cord. Spine-related injuries are some of the most complex and potentially debilitating that a person can suffer from. They may have a significant impact on a person's daily living.

The U.S. National Library of Medicine states that it's possible to reduce the long-term effects of paralysis if treatment is started early. Treatment options include medications, different types of physical therapy, and possible surgery or braces. However, it is not currently possible to entirely reverse damage that occurs to the spine. In many cases, a person may be left dealing with long-term burdens like mobility issues that can hamper their ability to work.

Lost wages aren't the only costs that will stack up, however. The actual therapy can be costly. Hospital stays, even discounting potential operations or medications, will cost a person. Medical devices may also be needed in both the short and long term. Depending on the severity of the injury, a person may need more long-term care such as mobility aids or even caretakers.

In addition, Mayo Clinic states that a common side effect of spinal injuries is pain due to nerve damage. This pain can vary in intensity and location. Some patients may find themselves needing to take prescription medications in order to help dull it to a tolerable level, which can add yet more costs.

The financial burden that results from a spinal injury can be another source of extreme pressure. On top of the struggles already associated with injury rehabilitation, it's a huge hurdle for spinal cord injury victims to face and can be one reason why financial compensation may help.
