Accidents involving stalled cars or trucks

When most people think about car accidents, a scenario involving both vehicles moving at high speeds might come to mind. Less often considered, but no less dangerous, are car or truck collisions that involve one vehicle that is standing still. Texas residents might not be fully aware of the dangers when a vehicle has broken down and is stalled in the middle of the highway or at the side of the road.

An accident that recently occurred in Fort Worth tragically illustrates this point. The Star-Telegram reported that a man died after he struck a semi-truck that had stalled on Interstate 35. Authorities did not have many details, but said that the smaller vehicle had become wedged beneath the truck’s trailer.

Stalled vehicles on high-speed roadways can cause extreme hazards in numerous ways. A car that is not moving in the middle of the highway can become a stationary target for other approaching vehicles. Drivers might strike a disabled vehicle on the shoulder. Those who are standing near their stalled car calling for help or changing a tire may be at significant risk of being struck, especially at night or in poor weather conditions.

It can be alarmingly easy for someone to be injured either while attending a stalled vehicle or by not seeing a disabled car or truck until it is too late. Speed, intoxication, fatigue and distraction are all factors that can cause serious accidents in these scenarios. Those who are injured by others may be entitled to seek compensation.
