Tips for dads paying child support

One of the most difficult aspects of getting a divorce is dealing with court orders for support payments. The process of splitting up and dividing your property is hard enough on your finances, so it can be stressful to manage child support on top of all of it.

While it can be distressing at times, it is crucial to remember that you should do everything in the best interest of your child. Keep the following guidelines in mind regarding child support payments.

Pay on time

Making your child support payments punctually is non-negotiable. Not only are on-time payments best for your child and your ex, but they are ideal for you too. If you fall behind, you can face a variety of penalties, including losing your driver's license or having your wages garnished. When money is tight, pay as much as you can and go to the court for help.

Thankfully, making payments in Texas is convenient. The Texas Attorney General website explains the various payment methods you can utilize, including credit or debit card, mail, money order, wage withholding, bank account auto-draft and kiosk locations.

Keep good records

Take note of all child support payments and any expenses related to your child. This will assist you if there are ever any disputes or you want to renegotiate the payments. If you have no documentation, you will not be able to prove what you spend.

Consider modifying the court order

If the financial, medical or personal circumstances of you or your spouse change significantly, you may be able to get the court to reduce or eliminate your child support payments. However, make sure you adhere to the current court order even if you are in the middle of negotiating a different amount.

While you want the best for your child, it can be burdensome and demanding to make child support payments. Do your best to make timely payments and seek help quickly if you are falling behind.
