When a car crash results in a TBI

At the Law Office of Roland R. Esparza, PC, in Texas, we know that a car crash can turn your life upside down. You could suffer serious injuries, one of the most catastrophic of which is a traumatic brain injury. Unfortunately, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that upward of 286,000 people suffer a TBI each year in a car crash.

As the Mayo Clinic explains, a traumatic brain injury is one which results in your brain malfunctioning in some way. The most common way you can suffer a TBI in a car crash is when the impact of the crash makes your head and neck move violently back and forth, thereby causing your brain to likewise move quickly and violently inside your skull. You can also suffer a TBI if a piece of flying glass or other debris hits you in the head or, worse yet, pierces your skull.

TBI symptoms

Your TBI likely will be unique to you since no two of them are completely alike, even when the injuries are similar in nature. What symptoms you will experience and when you will experience them vary from victim to victim. For instance, you may well experience one or more of the following symptoms:

  • Vision problems, including double and/or blurry vision
  • Hearing problems such as tinnitus
  • Balance and coordination problems
  • Speech problems
  • Cognitive and memory problems
  • Psychological problems, including mood swings, personality changes, irritability, anxiety, depression, etc.

Your symptoms may show themselves immediately after your car crash or may take up to a month or longer to develop. This is why an experienced trauma physician should examine you as soon as possible after you receive any type of head injury. Only (s)he can ask the proper questions and do the proper tests to determine whether or not that seemingly inconsequential “bump on your head” actually is a TBI that could damage you for life.
