Social media's impact on divorce

Social media has drastically altered the way people conduct themselves. While considerable research has gone into how social media apps such as Facebook and SnapChat have affected teens, it is also vital to recognize how adults use these services. In fact, some have found a correlation between excessive social media usage and an increased likelihood of divorce in married couples.

Many couples will bring social media posts up in court to prove a spouse committed adultery. In other instances, social media simply exacerbates issues already present in the relationship. It is paramount for married couples to be aware of these potential issues so that they can circumvent them in the long run.

Excessive usage

There is nothing inherently wrong with checking Facebook or Twitter as long as it does not come at the expense of spending time with loved ones. Some people spend hours of the day on social media, which is time they could use having a conversation with their spouses. Feeling neglected is a major predictor for divorce, so if you do not feel like you get enough attention from your spouse, it is vital you talk about it.

Incite jealousy and anger

Even if a person does not spend a lot of time on social media, it is still possible for their behavior online to create problems. For example, a spouse may see that his or her partner "liked" a picture from an attractive friend. This may not indicate adultery inherently, but it can incite such feelings. This is why it is important to recognize that social media typically does not create negative emotions. It only heightens emotions that are already there. If you suspect a spouse has cheated on you already, then seeing a post, even if it is innocuous, could increase those suspicions. For any marriage to avoid divorce, it is critical for all parties to be emotionally present for one another, and social media can get in the way of that.
