How can truck drivers avoid distractions?

When you drive a truck in Texas, it may sometimes be difficult to resist picking up your cellphone when you think a family member or a supervisor is trying to get in touch with you. However, distracted driving can be dangerous for you and for the other people on the road. To protect yourself, it is important to know how you can avoid distractions behind the wheel.

There are a few habits you can develop to make sure you have no distractions as you drive. Work Truck magazine says you should typically avoid using your cellphone. While your trucking company may allow the use of these devices if they are in a hands-free mode, phone calls can be distracting no matter how you place the call. One study found that no matter what setting a person uses, a phone call can take your mind off the road for 27 seconds after you hang up. Because of this, it is a good idea to make calls before you start driving and when you take a break.

You may keep papers, CDs and other items on your passenger seat in case you need them on the road. However, these items can distract you if they fall off the seat and shift while you drive. You should usually find a place for all of these things before you hit the road. Additionally, you should generally put all of your trucking gear away before you start driving.

Before you get on the road, you may want to consider all of the things you will need. If you know you need maps or directions to find your destination, you should usually set the GPS before you start your truck. Eating and drinking can also take your mind off the road, so you might want to decide where you will take a snack break. Additionally, it is a good idea to adjust your seat and set the volume for the radio before you drive.
