What is a safety-related auto defect?

Texan residents like you rely on your car to get where you need to go. Unfortunately, the roads are filled with dangers, some of which may even originate from your own vehicle. For example, defective manufacturing contributes to safety-related auto defects, and you may not even be aware of the recalls.

Why are auto recalls made in the first place? FindLaw states that recalls involve vehicle parts with defects that make the entire thing unsafe to drive. Typically, individual parts like brand airbags are recalled. However, in extreme cases where there are multiple parts failures or particularly severe defects, an entire model of vehicle may be recalled.

Safety-related defects involve any part of the vehicle that is crucial to maintaining the life of the driver or passengers. Examples include the steering and braking systems, lighting, airbags and seat belts. As an example, safety-related defects can result in wheels that can break or crack, accelerator controls that stick, or steering components that malfunction and cause you to lose full or partial control of the vehicle.

When safety systems are affected, this is also usually grounds for a recall. Examples include air bags that deploy under circumstances they are not intended to deploy under, seatbelts that do not function as they should, and seats that fail unexpectedly while a driver is in them.

If you have been involved in a car crash that you believe was caused or instigated by a safety-related defect, consider contacting an attorney to learn more about your compensation options.
