Steps to take after surviving a multi-vehicle accident

On the Sunday before Christmas 2019, a 69-car pileup occurred on Interstate 64 near Williamsburg, VA. More than 50 people required medical attention.

If you are ever involved in a multi-vehicle collision, would you know what steps to take afterward?

About the crash

The December 22 multi-vehicle crash began just before 8:00 a.m. The sudden onset of fog added to an icy surface on the Queens Creek Bridge caused the pileup that involved 69 vehicles traveling on westbound I-64 between Williamsburg and Newport News, VA. Newspaper and internet photos of the massive collision show first responders walking across the tops of vehicles in search of injured occupants.

Steps to follow

If you are in a multi-vehicle pileup, seek medical attention, even if you believe you are not hurt. You could have an underlying injury that may not show symptoms for hours or even days after the accident. While you await first responders, jot down contact information from others involved in the crash. Use your cellphone to take pictures of the damage to your vehicle and those around you. Add a copy of the police report about the accident to your own notes along with a copy of the medical report following your examination. Give all this information to your attorney, keeping copies for yourself.

Prepare for the unexpected

According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, hazardous weather is responsible for about 21% of the 5.8 million vehicle accidents that occur annually in our country. Thankfully, of the 55 people taken to area hospitals following the I-64 crash, only 11 cases were serious, and doctors expected everyone to survive. Now comes the question of fault and who crash victims should pursue in the quest for insurance compensation. If you ever find yourself among the victims of a multi-vehicle crash, explore your legal options without delay. To obtain fair compensation to cover your medical expenses and more, remember that the process of establishing fault begins with an in-depth investigation of the crash, along with identifying the various parties who bear potential liability.
