Divorce more likely in January than other months

While the number of divorces is declining, along with the number of marriages, the month of January has built a reputation for having more divorce filings than any other month of the year. The reason might be that couples stay together through the holidays, but then they are ready to end the marriage when the new year rolls around. Divorce can still be a stressful process for people in Texas, but an examination of the statistics can show that it’s not altogether uncommon. Searches for “divorce” on Google Trends are at their peak during the second week of January.

Searches for the term “divorce party” increased by 21% on average from December to January during 2017, 2018 and 2019. An attorney who has represented movie stars and other celebrities in their divorces said the stresses of the holidays can bring a marriage to the breaking point. Additionally, people are unlikely to begin the process right before major holidays like Christmas, especially if they have children they need to tell.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has reported that the number of divorce filings and annulments dropped by 8% between 2007 and 2017. One of the driving factors in declining divorce numbers, however, is declining marriage numbers. Divorce may not be easy, but it does not always have to be contentious either. Researching the process can make it easier, and approaching it correctly can relieve some of the stress.

Individuals in Texas who are considering or going through a divorce may want to meet with a lawyer. A lawyer who handles divorce cases might help by gathering and organizing information about the couple’s assets and liabilities or by negotiating the specifics of property division. A lawyer may also represent the client during official proceedings or draft and file the petition to begin the divorce.
