Keep your children at the heart of co-parenting decisions

The relationship between co-parents is sometimes rocky, but this doesn’t have to stop you from doing what’s best for the children. Instead, you can choose to focus on the kids and try to make things work out for them. It might not be easy but it is possible if you work as a team.

One of the most important things for parents to do is to ensure that the children have the support they need. The more you can help them through the changes that your divorce is bringing to their lives, the better they are likely going to fare.

Many children are concerned that they’ll have to choose between their parents. You and your co-parent should work as a team to let them know that this isn’t the case. Both parents can encourage the children’s relationship with the other one. Be sure to let them know that they should have fun and enjoy the time they have at their other home.

Every decision you make as a co-parent should focus on helping the children. There will be times that you have to deal with difficult situations, including mistakes made by you or your ex. Find ways to help mend the problem instead of placing blame about what happened.

You can include terms in the parenting plan that help ensure that the kids have what they need, including time with both parents. As they mature, you may realize that there are some things that need to be changed. Your family law attorney can help you seek the changes you believe will help your children.
